Education
Education entails the processes of the impartment of knowledge, whether of facts or methods, that enables a person to live "better" in the world. Sterling has devoted a substantial portion of his waking hours to receiving and supplying education.My experience as a student
For kindergarten through law school, that is twenty years of classroom instruction by one or more persons who themselves have been educated to impart knowledge to me and others. In addition, I received a substantial amount of knowledge from coaches as an athletics participant. I have thus far described formal education. During those years, I also spent a lot of time instructing myself through homework exercises and reading. During 10th through 14th years of my life, I read two different sets of encyclopedias from cover to cover, and read substantial parts of the Encyclopedia Britannica. I was more than a bit intellectually curious, but lost a lot of that during the very scholastically rigorous high school years. I was never a nerd, as substantial parts of my life were devoted to being a sports contestant, a leader of other students, and a social person. The knowledge I acquired during formal education consisted principally of learning to think like a scientist and learning to think like a lawyer. Unlike many other persons during those years, I did not acquire the knowledge that would have enabled me to play a musical instrument, to produce at a typewriter, to throw a curveball, to bat a tennis ball with a tennis racket, to talk with knowledge about the civil war, and although I was a high school football running back I never learned to see the opening between defenders. Most of the knowledge I recount here as not having learned would have made my life happier if I had learned it, but I chose other things to make me happy both then and later. The only regret I have about these particular bits of knowledge is not having learned to play tennis. The informal education process after law school, was, I believe, markedly different. Mostly I learned facts and I learned emotions.<Title>
